What this site is
Whitetail Gear Shed is an independent gear-guide site for deer hunters. We write the guides we wish existed when we were starting out: short on brand hype, long on the details that actually decide whether a piece of gear helps you see deer — how fast a trail camera wakes up, how much insulation a boot really needs for a stationary November sit, and which items on a beginner's list can safely wait a season.
Our focus is the working hunter's budget. Most of what we cover costs under $150, and every guide includes an honest "skip it" angle, because the fastest way to ruin a season is to blow the budget in September on things that don't matter.
How we pick gear
We build each guide from hands-on use where we have it, manufacturer specifications, and the long, consistent pattern of verified owner reports — the problems that show up again and again after a full season, not first-impression reviews. When a pick has a known weakness (a slow app, a boot that runs narrow, a camera that eats batteries), we say so in the cons, even on our top recommendations.
We don't accept payment for placements, and no manufacturer reviews our guides before publication. Prices change constantly during the season, so we link out for current pricing instead of printing numbers that will be wrong next week.
How the site makes money
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That commission keeps the site running and the guides free.
